Communications and marketing

Overview

Increasingly, libraries are recognizing the importance of strategic communications, public relations, and marketing efforts as a way of ensuring that users recognize the value of the our services and collections.

Marketing refers specifically to a process by which the needs of users/customers are analyzed. Unmet needs are addressed through improvements to products and services, which are promoted to users in the context of their needs.

In 2004, the American Marketing Association defined marketing as:"An organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders."

Communications is a term that can be broadly applied to efforts such as public relations, advertising, and outreach.

What's happening in Vermont?

The University of Vermont Libraries are currently executing a two-year communications plan, which calls for the creation of a tagline and logo, improvement of communications channels, and the development of campaigns to promote specific products and services, such as instruction and the depth and diversity of collections.

VLA CSLS meeting, 7/20/2007

The College and Special Libraries Section of the Vermont Library Association hosted a meeting at Norwich University on July 20th, 2007.

Social Software in Libraries

Norwich Distance Learning Librarian Meredith Farkas presented on Social Software in Libraries.

Building a Vt. College and Special Libraries Wiki

Past section president Selene Colburn gave an overview of the Vermont College and Special Librarieswiki under development and encouraged attendees to become contributors.

Innovative Interfaces

University of Vermont Digital Initiatives Librarian Winona Salesky presented on Innovative Interfaces for resource discovery, advocating for faceted browsing capabilities. Winona lists resources for additional investigation on the topic at her blog, the DIL.

Discussion Groups

Individuals broke off into three small groups to discuss challenges, developments, and ideas. Topics of wide-ranging discussion included federated search engines, e-resource management tools, internal use of wikis, website redesign, subject guides, instant messaging at the reference desk, course management software, the "new breed" of searchers, digital library projects, and time management for library professionals.
